Q: I just turned 60. Can I start cutting back on dental visits?
A: Not only should you not cut back on dental visits, but it’s also especially important for someone your age to keep a regular schedule of dental visits. In one sense, you’re more susceptible to tooth decay at your age than younger people are.
While you may be more disciplined in your oral health habits than a teenager, it’s a fact that as you age, more of the roots of your teeth are exposed, and older fillings may weaken. Also, other medical conditions you may have developed over time can impact your oral situation. For instance, anemia, cancer, heart disease and diabetes can put a person at greater risk for gum disease, and some medications also can cause oral complications.
If you wear dentures, you know they should be checked at least annually to make sure they’re still fitting properly. Dentures that have grown loose can allow bacteria to build up and inflame the tissue beneath the dentures. So, you should maintain your regular schedule of dental care and be sure to apprise your dentist of any changes in your general health situation, including any new medication you’re taking.
If you, your family, or friends need dental care, we would be honored to provide you with state-of-the-art dental care in our modern dental practice. Refer someone you love to someone you trust!
