One of the best ways to replace missing teeth these days is with dental implants. implants are posts made of titanium, that are placed into the jawbone. They act as replacement roots to support artificial teeth.

Inserting the post is a procedure normally done under local anesthesia, although some people prefer general anesthesia. Not everyone is a candidate for an implant. There must be enough bone in the jaw to support the implant. If there isn’t enough bone, the dentist may be able to graft bone.

Periodontal health is also a consideration when determining if someone is a viable candidate for an implant. It is important to continue regular visits to the dentist. The dentist will want to check regularly on the condition of the implant and of the tissue in the immediate area of the work. Talk with your dentist about whether you’re a candidate for an implant.

DENTAL OFFICE CONCIERGE PLANS

While we certainly have many patients who have traditional dental insurance plans, there is a new method of paying for dental services that is becoming very popular. A Concierge Plan is an in-office plan that helps patients afford their needed dentistry. It is not traditional dental insurance, but rather a “membership plan”, very similar to plans like Costco, Amazon Prime, Sam’s Club, etc. For one very affordable annual fee, a patient in our office receives a comprehensive exam for new patients, two professional clean

ings and two periodic exams per year, an emergency exam if needed, a full-mouth series of x-rays every five years, one set of bitewing x-rays per year, two fluoride treatments per year if needed and 15% off any other dental treatment they have done within that year. There is no limit on how much dentistry can be received. We have other plans too for families and for periodontal patients who need more frequent cleanings.

These are obvious benefits for patients who do not have dental insurance. But many people who have dental insurance have found that our in-office Concierge Plan works better for them…less out-of-pocket expense for many, no yearly cap, no insurance company dictating what treatment they will pay for, or which doctor you’re allowed to see. There is no deductible. No Claim forms to submit. No pre-authorizations are required. No restrictions for pre-existing conditions. Free consultations. No waiting periods. Q: Is there anything I can do about my fear of the dentist?

A: It’s important for you to know that you’re not alone in your condition. Fear of the dentist’s office often stems from an unpleasant childhood experience in which, say, a dentist used too little anesthesia or applied it improperly. This could have left you with a fear of a particular procedure, general anxiety about going to the dentist, or with a full-blown phobia. It may also come from a fear of needles or from the whine of the drill.

You should know, however, that dental technology has evolved considerably over the years. Anesthesia and the techniques for applying it have advanced.

The most important thing is to find a dentist with whom you can share your concerns and work out a plan in which you’ll feel comfortable. If it’s been some time since you have been to a dentist, talk with your friends about the dentists they use. Once you’ve found a dentist who makes you feel comfortable, talk with her or him about the options that are available. Once you’ve established a relationship, you’re going to feel great about your smile.

DENTURE CARE TIPS

Q: Any advice on taking care of my dentures?

A: Dentures require delicate handling when they are out of your mouth. They are quite fragile. When you are handling your dentures for whatever reason, do so over a forgiving surface, like your bed. If you are handling them in the bathroom, do so over a sink full of water and with folded towels on the countertop. A denture falling even a short distance onto a hard surface can break.

Dogs, by the way, seem to find dentures irresistible, so when they’re not in your mouth, keep them in a secure spot. You also would not want a curious child to find and damage them.

Just because you wear dentures does not mean you don’t have to practice good oral health techniques. Just as with natural teeth, dentures need to be brushed to remove food particles and plaque. While there are special brushes designed for dentures, a regular toothbrush with soft bristles can do the job. You can also talk with your dentist about an appropriate cleaning agent.

FACIAL PAIN

Q: Could my facial pain be related to a dental problem?

A: Some 15 percent of American adults experience chronic facial pain, according to the American Dental Association. The affliction can range from severe pain around and in the jaw and ear, to moderate pain and clicking and popping noises when opening the mouth to speak or chew. The pain can radiate into a general, dull ache in the head and neck.

A dental problem could certainly be at the root. For instance, an infection in a tooth, or in the sinus or gums, could lead to facial pain. It could also come from a malfunction in the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ), which is just in front of the ears. Your dentist will most likely be able to identify the cause of the problem through an examination that might include x-rays.

Treatment, depending on the diagnosis, could be something as simple as stress-reduction exercises or muscle-relaxing medication. Some cases have been alleviated by wearing a mouth guard at night to prevent teeth-grinding, a condition called bruxism. Talk with your dentist for more information on the problem of facial pain.

ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Q: What exactly is root canal therapy?

A: Root canal therapy is a procedure a dentist, or an endodontist, performs to treat problems in the soft core inside the tooth, the material known as the dental pulp. It is the pulp that holds the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue that resides within the root canal space inside of a tooth. A deep cavity or a crack in the tooth can let bacteria get into the pulp. That causes an infection that eventually will create a pocket of pus at the tip of the tooth’s root in the jawbone. That pocket of pus is called an abscess. An abscess causes swelling, can become quite painful and can also damage the bone around the tooth.

The first step in a root canal procedure is making an opening in the crown of the tooth through which the dentist can remove the infected pulp. Often times root canal therapy can be performed in one appointment but not always. If there is quite a bit of infection, then the interior of the tooth is cleaned out and sealed with a temporary filling at the first appointment. When the infection is fully gone, the dentist will fill or seal the root canals in a second appointment. After that, the tooth needs to be protected with a crown in order to prevent it from fracturing.

FREQUENCY OF X-RAYS

Generally, if you are a new patient, the dentist will take x-rays of your mouth to examine the unseen portion of your mouth and learn of any problems you have. That initial set of x-rays, or radiographs, also will serve as a baseline for any future treatment.

The schedule for future x-rays will depend on your general health, your age and your dental condition. For instance, if you suffer from gum disease or tend to be prone to cavities, x-rays may be necessary more frequently to check on those conditions’ progression. Bone loss and cavities between teeth will be visible on an x-ray, but not to the naked eye. Regarding age, children may need more frequent x-ray examinations because their teeth and jaws are in a state of continuing development.

In terms of additional lifetime risk from radiation exposure, dental x-ray examinations, especially digital x-rays, are considered by experts to have negligible impact. Your dentist can give you a thorough explanation of the value of radiograph examinations and how they may be appropriate to your particular case.

What Happens When I Go to the Dentist for a Toothache?

To treat your toothache, your dentist will first obtain your medical history and conduct a physical exam. He or she will ask you questions about the pain, such as when the pain started, how severe it is, where the pain is located, what makes the pain worse, and what makes it better. Your dentist will examine your mouth, teeth, gums, jaws, tongue, throat, sinuses, ears, nose, and neck. X-rays may be taken as well as other tests, depending on what your dentist suspects is causing your toothache.

What Treatments Are Available for a Toothache?

Treatment for a toothache depends on the cause. If a cavity is causing the toothache, depending upon the extent of the cavity, your dentist will fill the cavity. A root canal might be needed if the tooth decay has caused an infection of the tooth’s nerve. If the decay is too extensive, the tooth may require extraction. An antibiotic may be prescribed if there is fever or swelling of the jaw.

How Can Toothaches Be Prevented?

Since most toothaches are the result of tooth decay, following good oral hygiene practices is the best way to prevent toothaches. Good oral hygiene practices consist of brushing regularly with a fluoride-containing toothpaste, flossing at least once daily, rinsing once or twice a day with an antiseptic mouthwash, and seeing your dentist twice a year for professional cleaning. In addition to these practices, eat foods low in sugar and ask your dentist about sealants and fluoride applications.

TOOTH WHITENING

Tooth bleaching can be a very effective way to remove stains and restore a whiter, more youthful appearance to your teeth. There are three main ways people can bleach their teeth:

One is by using over-the-counter products. They can work, but since the concentration level is lower in non-prescription products, it will generally take longer…several weeks or even months to achieve the amount of lightening you are looking for. It is the least expensive method.

A second method is done solely in the dental office. It uses bright lights, (often a laser) and a professional strength bleaching solution. That method is done generally in one or two appointments for an hour or two each. It is the most expensive of the methods.

The third method is a combination of “in office” and “at home” procedure. It involves making impressions of your teeth. From those impressions, custom trays are made and fitted for your teeth. Then professional strength bleaching solution is dispensed to you and you place that into your trays for an hour a day until you achieve the whitening level you and your dentist desire. Our office does bleaching using this method. We do that because all bleaching fades over time and people want to “touch up” their smiles from time to time. If you already have the custom bleaching trays made, all you need are some tubes of bleaching gel. This is a MUCH lower cost than starting all over from scratch with the solely “in office” laser bleaching method.
