A BURN IN THE MOUTH
Most of us, at one time or another, bite into a sizzling piece of pizza and scorch the roof of our mouth right behind the two front teeth. Or maybe it was the first sip of a steaming hot cup of coffee.
If you burn the inside of your mouth or your tongue, and you have access to an ice cube, put it in your mouth. Crushing the cube into ice chips is gentler on a fresh burn. Otherwise, rinse the area with cold water as soon as possible. This will help ease the pain and minimize both the swelling and tissue damage. Vanilla ice cream can also feel quite soothing! If the burn is particularly uncomfortable, you can go to the pharmacy and get an over-the-counter product like Orabase, an oral bandage, a pectin ointment or a topical mouth analgesic containing benzocaine. For the next few days rinse your mouth four or five times daily with a full glass of water in which you’ve dissolved a teaspoon of salt. This will promote steady healing. Avoid all mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which would further burn the tissues.
