BENEFITS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
Conventional restorative dentistry has traditionally replaced missing teeth with either removable or fixed bridgework. Those restorations involve either clasping the natural teeth that remain (for removable partial dentures) or capping natural teeth in order to replace the missing teeth (for fixed bridgework). While those treatment options still exist and can work for years there are stresses that are placed on the remaining natural teeth in order to replace missing teeth. Those stresses can lead to the loss of otherwise healthy teeth. Dental implants offer a way to replace missing teeth without involving utilizing any of your natural teeth.
An implant restoration typically involves three components: the implant, an abutment and a crown. The dental implant itself replaces the root portion of a missing tooth. That part of the restoration is the part that you never see. It is beneath the gum and within the jawbone. It is placed surgically and is left to heal for a few months before it can be restored. Restoration of the implant involves making impressions in order to custom-make the two other components. The abutment attaches to the implant with an internal screw. The crown is then cemented onto the abutment.
Once a tooth is replaced with an implant, abutment and a dental crown, it is now a freestanding tooth again and not attached to any other tooth. You can floss between it and the adjacent teeth just like you can between any other teeth…and it never can get tooth decay!
