MOUTHWASHES COULD REDUCE THE RISK OF CORONAVIRUS TRANSMISSION
Sars-Cov-2 viruses can be inactivated using certain mouthwashes. High viral loads can be detected in the oral cavity and throat of some Covid-19 patients. The use of mouthwashes that are effective against Sars-Cov-2 could thus help to reduce the viral load and possibly the risk of coronavirus transmission over the short term. This is useful, for example, prior to dental treatments.
In our office, we use a 1% hydrogen peroxide solution as a pre-rinse for 60 seconds. It not only kills the Coronavirus, but other viruses and bacteria too. This may very well be a procedure we continue after the Covid-19 pandemic is over since it would help reduce the spread of other respiratory infections like the common cold or the flu.
