NOCTURNAL TEETH GRINDING
Around 15-20% of the population grind their teeth while they are asleep. Daily stresses of life often are transferred to this damaging activity. The pressure, often immense, can cause wearing away of tooth structure leading to fractures of teeth and their restorations, and can also result in pain in the jaw muscles and headaches.
The most common treatment for nighttime tooth clenching and grinding is the fabrication of an acrylic appliance that is worn at night, often called a “night guard”. Most people do not clench or grind when they wear this occlusal guard, but those who still do typically clench or grind with less force and they don’t grind tooth surfaces against once another. They wear the acrylic out instead of their teeth. Some people also clench or grind during the day. “Night guards” therefore can be worn during the day too.
