Oral Cancer
Q: How serious is a tumor in the mouth?
A: The good news is that most tumors that appear in the mouth are benign, meaning non-cancerous. Though most are non-cancerous, not all tumors are. Every year in the United States of America, approximately 50,000 people contract oral cancer. One in five of those people won’t survive it.
Dentists are trained to recognize when tissues inside the mouth don’t look normal. We perform oral cancer exams during every dental check-up. Early detection is critical. Since oral cancers are mostly hidden inside the mouth, it is difficult for people to recognize changes themselves. Oral cancer is one more reason why regular dental examinations are so important.
