CARBS, SUGARY FOODS MAY INFLUENCE POOR ORAL HEALTH
The foods we eat on a regular basis influence the makeup of the bacteria — both good and bad — in our mouths. While it well known that sugary foods contribute to tooth decay, researchers are finding that they also play a large role in periodontal disease as well as overall systemic health.
Scientists from the University at Buffalo found that higher intake of sugary and high glycemic load foods — like doughnuts and other baked goods, soft drinks, breads, and non-fat yogurts — may influence poor oral health and, perhaps, systemic health outcomes especially in older women.
The researchers observed that bacteria associated with periodontal disease, tend to flourish with increased sugar intake.
